Colin Meets with the Charity Commission

Colin Breed, Liberal Democrat MP for South East Cornwall, yesterday met representatives of the Charity Commission to talk about the needs of local charities, and how they can best use the resources at their disposal. Of the 190,000 charities across England and Wales, 418 are based within the boundaries of South East Cornwall, from national and multi-national charities through to smaller ventures running village halls and parks.

Cornwall's five Liberal Democrat MP's have today criticised the Government for failing dental patients across Cornwall after they obtained figures which show that 7,905 fewer patients have been seen by an NHS dentist since the Government introduced reforms which were designed to improve access to dentistry.

The Finance Bill Committee

The Finance Bill is of course the legislation which enacts the Government's tax proposals as laid down in the Budget. It is unusual because it does not go to the Lords for scrutiny and so the Committee stages are most important. The Committee, of which I am a member, sits for around ten hours a week in sessions scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday mornings and afternoons.

Today in Parliament we will debate the Government's proposals to extend the current detention limit without trial to 42 days. I am determined to vote against this for the following reasons.

Colin Breed has today called upon the Government to implement a support package for our fishermen similar to that agreed between the European Union and France. Whilst under normal circumstances operating aid for the fisheries sector contravenes EU rules, the recent fuel price increases have put our fishing industry in jeopardy.

This week a pupil from Fowey Community College joined Colin Breed to experience working life at the House of Commons. He spent the week shadowing Mr Breed and watched him speak in the House of Commons, attended debates and Committees, sat in on a number of meetings and generally saw how the mother of Parliaments operates, with all its idiosyncrasies. Commenting, Colin said "Noah has a fantastic knowledge of politics. I am glad I was able to help him with his political aspirations! It is good to know that Fowey Community College is equipping its pupils for the real world by encouraging them to try out possible career paths. It is very important to create an understanding and awareness of the world of work and hopefully through work experience provide an insight into how education at school has direct relevance to future careers and jobs."

Following a hustings on Saturday, South East Cornwall Liberal Democrats have selected Karen Gillard as the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for South East Cornwall. Karen grew up on Rame Peninsula, going to school in Torpoint before studying Law at Plymouth University. Karen was called to the Bar in 2004, and led the Liberal Democrat group on Plymouth City Council for four years.

Boatmaster Licensing

Colin Breed today met with the Parliamentary under Secretary of State for Transport, Jim Fitzpatrick, to discuss changes in licensing regulations for boats. The rules, which came into effect on the 1st January 2008, impacted heavily on local boat services as they classify all boats as either Tier I ( Europe-wide) or Tier II (inland lakes and waterways). There is no exception made for boats such as the Fowey to Mevagissey ferry, which operates on the sea and on inland waterways.

Spanish Fishing Subsidies Exposed

After a meeting with fishermen in Looe, Colin Breed investigated rumours that the Spanish Government subsidises its fishing fleet. The massive increase in fuel costs now puts Cornish fishermen at a distinct disadvantage to their Spanish counterparts. The actions of the Spanish Government fall within EU rules, which allow a "de minimis" subsidy to each fishing enterprise of €30,000 a year.

BREED SPEAKS OUT: "Inadequate Public Transport Provision Fails our Students"

Colin Breed , Liberal Democrat MP for South East Cornwall will today speak to the House on the impact of an unreliable and expensive public transport system on Cornwall 's young students. The cost, in terms of money and time, of getting to colleges from rural locations is continuing to rise, with journeys of two hours not uncommon. The Government appears content to shift the burden of provision onto local colleges, taking more money away from education budgets. This is unsustainable in the long term. Current trends show an upsurge in car ownership amongst 17-19 year olds. There are major implications of this, in terms of environmental damage, congestion on roads not designed for large numbers of cars, and an increase in accidents with inexperienced drivers using poor roads in slippery conditions.
